The initiative, financed with European funds from the Life + Programme, will prevent the emission of 200 tons of CO2 per year from Iberdrola's combined cycle plant in Arcos de la Frontera.
The CO2Algaefix is a pioneering project aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of microalgae as captors of CO2 emissions. This initiative, led by AlgaEnergy, is backed by a consortium that also integrates the multinational company Iberdrola, which will provide the land for the plant and will implement systems for extraction and manipulation of combustion gases; Exeleria will be responsible for the technical secretariat of the project; the Andalusian Energy Agency, which will provide its bioenergetics vision and will also coordinate the action of promotion and dissemination; the Universities of Seville and Almeria, will participate in the design of the facilities and will ensure the optimum productivity of microalgae cultures; and the public body Madrid Biocluster, which will provide its expertise in biotechnology projects.
