His important contributions to science have been especially valued by the jury, made up of experts from the biotechnology sector, including the General Manager of AlgaEnergy.
Francisco Juan Martínez Mojica -known as Francis Mojica-, is a microbiologist, professor at the University of Alicante and researcher of world significance, and has been awarded the VIII National Biotechnology Award. The delivery will take place at the end of March in Madrid.
The jury, made up of experts from the sector, has highlighted his pioneering work in the sequences that he named CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) and that have given rise to new lines of development in all types of biotechnology (health, agri-food, industrial, etc.). Not surprisingly, the winners of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry were recognized for their work on CRISPR, based on the basic research works that Mojica developed. The microbiologist has long been in the pools of several prestigious international scientific awards such as the Princess of Asturias or the Nobel Prize -in both Medicine and Chemistry categories-, but until now they have resisted him. However, he is the only Spaniard to hold the prestigious Albany Prize.
The National Biotechnology Award has already been awarded to other highly relevant figures such as the Director of the National Center for Oncological Diseases, María Blasco; the President of Pharmamar Group, José María Fernández Sousa-Faro; the former President of AseBio, Regina Revilla; the researcher and CEO of Genomica, Rosario Cospedal; the CSIC researcher José Luis García López and, more recently, the former Minister Cristina Garmendia.
The jury for this edition has been made up of personalities such as Fernando Peláez, Director of the CNIO's biotechnology program; Lluís Montoliu, researcher at the CNB-CSIC; Rogelio Pardo, President of Madrid Network; José Antonio Plaza, President of the Association of Biotechnology Communicators; Mª Cruz Martín-Delgado, Head of Intensive Medicine at Torrejón Hospital; Gonzaga Ruíz de Gauna, coordinator of Biovegen; and Carlos Rodríguez-Villa, General Manager of AlgaEnergy, among other renowned researchers and experts in the biotechnology sector.
