Del Campo provides the biotechnology company with valuable knowledge and experience in the microalgae sector.
The portfolio of projects that AlgaEnergy leads or in which it participates with a prominent role and always as the only microalgae company is evidence of AlgaEnergy’s commitment to R&D&i. At international level the R&D&i projects amount to more than 80 million Euros of investment wherein over 150 scientific partners namely universities, research centers and companies collaborate.
In order to strengthen its R&D&i Department, AlgaEnergy has announced the recent appointment of Dr. Jose Antonio del Campo as Director of that department, made effective since last February 2020. Del Campo has a degree in Biology from the University of Malaga, having completed his doctoral thesis in Microalgae Biotechnology with Professor Miguel García Guerrero -Scientific Director of AlgaEnergy and one of the few researchers recognized as a one of the global authorities in the biotechnology of microalgae-, at the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (IBVF), a co-managed center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Seville. After a 6-year stay at the University of California (UCLA), where he worked in the laboratory of Sabeeha Merchant, one of the world's leading experts in the microalgae model Chlamydomonas, he returned to Spain to re-join García Guerrero´s working group in the IBVF. He has specialized in biomedicine since 2008 and has worked in various hospitals in Spain. As a result, he has accumulated over 24 years of research experience -half of which was focused on microalgae, and the other half on biomedicine. In this time, he has authored more than 40 academic publications.
In his new position as the Director of R&D&i, Jose Antonio del Campo will manage a fundamental activity for AlgaEnergy. As Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, President of the company points out: “We believe that R&D&i is the origin of everything we do but it will also be the basis of our future. Our firm commitment to innovation is what is enabling us to develop innovative, sustainable and, above all, highly effective solutions for industries in which microalgae have immense potential for application”. Regarding his recent appointment to AlgaEnergy, Del Campo has affirmed: “I am looking forward to this new stage. There is a team with a lot of talent and capacity in AlgaEnergy, and I believe that there is enormous potential to develop and take advantage of it. It is also a privilege and very pleasant to work with my mentor, Professor García Guerrero again”.
