The prestigious Spanish newspaper "El País", in collaboration with Vodafone, published on the 1st of April in its digital edition an interesting report about AlgaEnergy. Titled "The fuel of the future: planes that flight with microalgae", is framed within the section 'The future is fascinating', a space that aims to help the reader to understand how, through different pioneering initiatives, technology will improve our lives in many aspects.
In the interesting audio-visual report, Carlos Rodríguez-Villa and María Segura, General Manager and Technical Director of AlgaEnergy, respectively, highlight the properties of microalgae and their potential for application in different industries with a particular focus on the energetic sector, in which the company has accredited substantial developments towards the obtaining of cleaner and more sustainable biofuels. AlgaEnergy’s technology developed for microalgae cultivation and the environmental factor -microalgae are the most efficient CO2 biofixation systems on Earth- had an outstanding presence in the report, which, in only 2 days, has generated more than 40,000 views on YouTube.
Obtaining cleaner and inexhaustible biofuels based on microalgae is one of the company’s R&D initiatives. In this sense, AlgaEnergy is currently collaborating with the ‘Rey Juan Carlos’ University (URJC) to carry out an Industrial Doctorate in this field of science and knowledge. Under the title ‘Environmental, energy and economic analysis of the production of advanced biofuels from microalgae’, its objective is the sustainable production of biofuels obtained from these microorganisms. The project, which has a duration of 3 years, is partly financed by the Community of Madrid, and complements AlgaEnergy’s project named GENETDIESEL®, in which the company performed state of the art genetic engineering and achieved outstanding results, such as taking a wild strain and, through the modification of metabolic routes, doubling its fatty acids content susceptible to be transformed into biofuels. AlgaEnergy has already demonstrated its ability to produce 4th generation biofuels, and its current mission is to reduce its costs.
