In this optimal scenario, organized by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the company presented its brand AlgaeFood®
.
The global demand of microalgae and cyanobacteria for the food industry, as well as products derived from them, is extraordinarily growing due to its important repercussion in the fields of nutrition and health. They are an important source of nutrients and compounds of great interest and are essential both in order to face the malnutrition in the third world countries as well as in the nutritional supplements industry.
In this framework, the workshop ‘Microalgae application in food industry’, organized by the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), took place on the 2nd of July in Madrid. AlgaEnergy was invited to participate, context in which María Segura, the company’s Technical Director, held a presentation about the company’s brand AlgaeFood®, under which AlgaEnergy commercializes high value products and functional ingredients for their application in the field of the human nutrition.
The technology developed by AlgaEnergy and the R&D programs participated by the company in the field of nutrition were the main highlights of the presentation. "Microalgae, thanks to their rich composition, have an immense potential for application in the food industry. On this basis, our technology and the know-how consolidated by the company, generated during four decades of research, position AlgaEnergy in a privilege situation to take advantage of this high quality raw material", highlighted Segura.
Committed to R&D
Currently, AlgaEnergy participates in three R&D projects in the field of the nutrition. On the one hand, the METASIN project. Its main objective is to research and develop ready to market multifunctional active ingredients, foods and nutritional complements, which are able to have on influence on the pathologies and risk factors associated to the metabolic syndrome. The aim is to improve the quality of life of the targeted population in an integral way.
On the other hand, the PROGRESO project, which investigates in innovative technologies which allow the obtaining of nutritional products of high added value, which improve the content of proteins in the diets and provide technical solutions to targeted population segments with specific protein demands.
Finally, the ALIPROT program. The main objective of this project is to research technological and healthy features of different protein sources as well as their applicability in different food matrices. This research will aim to establish methodologies for the design and development of innovative ingredients and new healthy foods with high protein content, tailored to the nutritional and sensory requirements of population groups with greater muscle and vascular wear.
These three R&D projects, in which AlgaEnergy collaborates with universities and leading companies of the food sector, have the support of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).
