The course "Microalgae Biotechnology: Industrial applications", held for the first time, will take place on November the 26th at the Biological Research Center of the CSIC (CIB-CSIC, Madrid). It is directed to students and professionals amongst the microalgae biotechnology sector and its applications for aquaculture, nutraceutics, pharmaceutics, environment and bioenergy. General issues will be presented at a scientific level and relevant cases of successful national companies will be identified during the course.
The program consists of a SCIENTIFIC SESSION where issues related to algae biology at microbiological and biochemical level (diversity, cell structure, physiological properties, metabolism, etc.) will be treated. Furthermore, the most common biotech applications and their potential introduction in the market will be discussed.
The BIOTECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS session will expose case studies of initiatives aimed at obtaining products with high added value, cropping systems, water bioremediation, capture and use of CO2 waste, aquaculture and energy recovery from biomass (biofuels or biogas). During the meeting, members of AlgaEnergy will participate as speakers, for the lecture "ALGAENERGY, SPANISH BIOTECHNOLOGICAL COMPANY FOR MICROALGAE."
At the end, a round table will take place where “current market of microalgae and its medium to long term expectations” will be discussed. Business leaders, public and private research centers, universities and technology platforms in the biotechnology, bioenergy and biochemistry sectors, such as Bioplat, Asbiomad, Asebio, Sebiot and Platform for Biotech-markets are invited. AlgaEnergy has again an outstanding participation, during this roundtable as leader of the technological platform Bioplat.
The course is part of the objectives of the "INSPIRA1-CM" program, funded by the Community of Madrid, whose main objective is the development of biotechnological tools for genetic improvement of the cyanobacteria Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis).
